FALSE AND TRUE TRANSLATIONS

I. JOHN 12:37-38

My translation in the Freed-Hardeman Version of John 12:37-38 is false:

Though he had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him, so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, ...

The opponents of Jesus were not trying to fulfill prophecy. The same error is in the KJV, ASV, NASV, NKJV, NIV, and the NRSV, all following the telikos meaning of hina, "in order that" (Thayer, 304).

The 4th edition of the FHV will follow the ekbatikos meaning of hina, "with the result" (Thayer, 304), saying:

Though he had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in him, with the result that the word of Isaiah the prophet is fulfilled, ...

II. JOHN 17:12

My translation in the FHV of John 17:12 is false, along with the KJV, ASV, NASV, NKJV, NIV, and the NRSV:

I guarded them, and not one is lost, except the son of destruction, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

The 4th edition of the FHV in John 17:12 will say:

I guarded them, and not one if lost, except the son of destruction, with the result that the Scripture is fulfilled.

III. JOHN 19:23-24

My translation in the FHV of John 19:23-24 is false, along with the KJV, ASV, NASV, NKJV, NIV, and the NRSV:

The soldiers crucified Jesus, and took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one to each soldier, and the inner garment. The inner garment was seamless, woven throughout from the top. They said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but let us cast lots for it, to see who will get it." This happened so that the scripture might be fulfilled, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and cast lots for my garment."

The 4th edition of the FHV in John 19:23-24 will say:

The soldiers who did the crucifying took Jesus’ clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. This left the inner garment, which was without a seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but let us cast lots for it, to see who will get it." In this way the Scripture was fulfilled, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and cast lots for my garment."
